Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) position requiring strong vasoactive drip titration experience and NC or compact RN licensure.

Details

  • PCU/Stepdown unit that functions similarly to an ICU with 20 beds and an ADC of 18
  • Target patient ratio of 1:3-4
  • Night shift, 12-hour shifts (3x12), 18:45-7:15
  • Patients include post rapid response, respiratory distress, unstable hemodynamics, withdrawal, GI bleeds, post-op GYN/GU/GI/thoracotomy/neuro/ortho, and OB complications (Pitocin)
  • Patient population spans adolescent, adult, and geriatric
  • Only one pressor drip per patient permitted on unit; additional pressors require ICU transfer
  • Drips managed on unit include Cardizem, Nitro, Precedex, Cardene, Levophed, Dopamine, Dobutamine, and Neo
  • Bedside telemetry monitors with remote backup used for dysrhythmia recognition and treatment
  • Unit uses A-lines, BiPAPs, chest tubes, and tracheostomies; no ventilators on unit
  • Uses Pyxis and Epic systems, with Epic experience preferred
  • Floating required as needed to a sister ICCU unit
  • Weekend requirement of every other weekend
  • No block scheduling; schedule created by nurse manager

Requirements

  • Active NC or compact RN license (pending license/certs OK for submission)
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant RN experience required
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required
  • Required skills: arterial line management, titration of vasoactive and cardiac drips, PCU/DOU/IMC/Stepdown and telemetry experience
  • Experience interpreting and managing dysrhythmias, and use of rapid response/code teams
  • Experience with IV insulin protocols, blood product administration, and heparin protocols
  • Central line, peripheral line, and PICC line care/management experience
  • Experience with chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac), external CPAP/BiPAP, high flow nasal cannula, and nasal cannula
  • Non-invasive airway management and tracheostomy management skills
  • Isolation precautions/PPE experience
  • IV start and telemetry experience
  • Must pass EKG testing prior to start

Additional Information

  • Provide advanced-level nursing care to hemodynamically unstable patients including drip titration and dysrhythmia management
  • Recognize and respond to rapid response and code situations on the unit
  • Weekly hospital orientation with mandatory attendance for all classes
  • Navy, white, or a combination of the two required for scrubs
  • Must work 2 of the 3 major holidays
  • No RTO permitted during the first week of assignment; up to 7 days RTO may be auto-approved outside of holidays
  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
  • Former Novant Health or New Hanover PERM/PRN/EP employees must wait 12 months before reapplying, with facility approval required
  • Local candidates within 50 miles accepted at a lower rate
  • Travel pairs allowed if on different units with separate transportation and schedules
