JOB DESCRIPTION

The Travel Overnight (Awake) Counselor provides essential overnight care and supervision for individuals experiencing mental health crises. They will provide support across various residential programs on an as-needed basis. This position requires flexibility, adaptability, and the ability to travel between different program sites, including Salinas, Marina, and Monterey. The Travel Overnight (Awake) Counselor ensures the safety, well-being, and security of clients during overnight hours while maintaining a calm, supportive, and therapeutic environment. The role includes direct client engagement, crisis intervention, medication assistance, documentation, and light administrative and housekeeping tasks. The Travel Overnight (Awake) Counselor works onsite at assigned location(s).

COMPENSATION

$24.90 - $33.35 per hour. Nonexempt; 27 hours/week; Compensation is based on education and experience. Eligible for mileage reimbursement for travel from site to site. Eligible to receive an hourly pay incentive to work at a licensed site. Eligible to receive an hourly overnight pay incentive for working at a licensed site.

Program Director or Designee.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required: High school diploma or GED. The ideal candidate will possess strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to work effectively as part of a team and accept supervision. They should be capable of maintaining appropriate boundaries while engaging in close interpersonal relationships and be able to learn and apply principles of social rehabilitation. Additionally, the candidate should be responsible, flexible, empathetic, and skilled at relating to clients, staff, professionals, and community members.

Drivers license for at least two years and driving record acceptable to insurance carrier.

Valid California driver's license; auto in safe operating condition; auto liability insurance; good driving record; criminal record clearance; proof of authorization to work in the United States as required by Immigration and Reform Act of 1986. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Preferred: One (1) year of related experience or a Bachelor's degree in a related field.

One year of experience in related field; Examples of acceptable experience include, but are not limited to, working with adults with psychiatric disabilities and/or substance use disorders using a social rehabilitation model; experience in residential or inpatient treatment programs; providing counseling or support services to this population; or working with other individuals with disabilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Travel between various licensed locations to provide staffing coverage as needed. Adapt and learn program-specific guidelines, policies, and procedures at each site, including different program environments, routines, and client populations.
• Stay awake and active during shift hours to provide care and supervision of residents, responding appropriately to any crisis situations.
• Conduct intakes and interviews, assessing risks such as suicidality, violence, and substance abuse.
• Identify, assess, and respond to crisis situations. Set clear limits and ensure the safety of both residents and the facility.
• Provide informal, supportive counseling and guidance to residents during overnight hours by listening attentively, responding empathetically, and assisting with problem-solving to address any concerns or challenges that may arise.
• Conduct regular scheduled nightly rounds to ensure clients' well-being and safety in accordance with program best practices and regulatory guidelines.
• Promptly log and report any concerns or incidents related to clients or program operations.
• Document interactions and relevant details accurately in staff logs and residents' electronic health records (EHR).
• Assist residents with self-administration of medications.
• Maintain and update a daily log of resident medication records, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
• Update residents' Medication Administration Records (MAR) on a weekly basis, ensuring all medication information is current.
• Inventory residents' medications and follow up on medication refills.
• Perform daily household duties and assist with resident meals when necessary.
• Perform administrative duties as necessary.
• Accurately scan, upload, and verify all admission and discharge-related client documents into the electronic health record (EHR), ensuring proper categorization, legibility, and completeness of files. Troubleshoot any scanning or system issues to maintain up-to-date and accurate electronic records.
• Participate in monthly staff meetings, contributing to discussions on coworker communication, resident reviews, and agency matters.
• Other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to: operate a motor vehicle; climb stairs; possess good communication skills; meet the requirements of the classification and have mobility, vision, hearing and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed. Capable of the following extended activities: walking, standing, sitting, climbing stairs. Capable of the following intermittent activities: stooping, kneeling, lifting 25 pounds or more and bending in the performance of infrequently performed office duties.
