Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Cardio Thoracic Telemetry Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12H Nights Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum 2 years License: Active Illinois license required Certifications: BLS, ACLS recommended Must-Have: EKG interpretation Medication titration Basic nursing skills Description: The unit has a total of 70 beds. The nurse-to-patient ratio during the day is 1:4-5. The night ratio is 1:5-6. Common diagnoses include Myocardial Infarction, Congestive Heart Failure, Atrial Fibrillation, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, and patients undergoing pacemaker or AICD placement. The unit often manages patients following lung surgeries, including chest tube placements and esophagectomies. It is required for RNs to be skilled in EKG interpretation and to have the capability to titrate medications. Commonly used titratable drips include Cardizem and Heparin. A charge nurse is available 24/7, typically not taking on patient assignments. There is also a house supervisor present around the clock. Patient care technicians are available, with a ratio of 1:8-9 during the day, 1:9-10 in the evenings, and 1:10-12 overnight. RNs are required to manage specific respiratory equipment such as CPAP and BiPAP machines as part of their patient's home regimen and provide high flow oxygen only in special circumstances. Nurses must be capable of reading and interpreting telemetry strips as monitors are present on the unit. Shifts include every other weekend rotation and holiday requirements. Nurses may need to float to other medical units as required. A standard dress code applies; scrubs should not feature children or cartoon prints, as this is an adult unit. Unit-specific orientation is typically provided based on prior experience in similar facilities.
