Description:
The unit has 13 beds.
The nurse-patient ratio is typically 1:2, but may also be 1:1 or 1:3.
Common patient diagnoses include post-surgical cases, open abdomens, multi-system trauma, and endovascular issues.
Nurses are required to titrate drips, including pressors, sedation, paralytics, and insulin.
There is a charge nurse and house supervisor present on each shift, with the charge nurse taking an assignment as staffing allows.
Patient care techs are available on the unit, with a ratio of 1:10.
Intensivists are in-house 24/7, with telemedicine support available outside regular hours.
Respiratory therapy is present in the ICU 24/7.
Nurses are responsible for reading and interpreting telemetry strips, although monitor technicians are available.
12-hour shifts run from 7:00 to 19:30.
There is a requirement for weekend shifts, with six weekend shifts in a six-week period.
Nurses will be expected to work every other holiday.
There is no call or standby requirement.
Floating may occur; if a traveler is floated to a lower level of care, they will take a full team.
There is no specific dress code for scrubs.
Unit-specific orientation is provided, including training on EPIC and shadowing with preceptors.
The charting system utilized is EPIC.
