Description:
The unit typically has a patient-nurse ratio of 1:2.
There may be cases with a ratio of 1:1 or 1:3.
Common patient diagnoses include post-surgical cases, open abdomens, multisystem trauma, and endovascular conditions.
Nurses are required to titrate drips, which may include pressors, sedation, paralytics, and insulin.
There is a charge nurse and/or house supervisor on each shift, and charge nurses may take an assignment as staffing allows.
Nurse aids or patient care technicians are available with a ratio of 1:10.
Intensivists are present in the ICU 24/7.
Telemedicine intensivist support is available, along with an attending physician on call.
Respiratory therapy is present in the ICU 24/7.
Monitoring techs are available, and nurses are responsible for reading and interpreting telemetry strips.
The shift schedule is from 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM.
Weekend requirements include 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week period.
Holiday requirements are every other holiday.
There is no call or standby requirement.
Floating to a lower level of care may occur, with full team assignments for travelers.
There are no specific scrub colors or dress codes required.
Unit-specific orientation is provided, with time for learning the electronic health record system and shadowing a preceptor.
