Description

Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Surgical Intensive Care Unit Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-hour Days Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum 1 year of ICU experience required License: Active Illinois nursing license or confirmation of application process Certifications: BLS, ACLS Must-Have: Level I trauma experience, ICU experience, ability to titrate drips Description: The Surgical Intensive Care Unit has a capacity of 13 beds. The nurse-to-patient ratio is typically 1:2 but may vary between 1:1 and 1:3. Common patient diagnoses include post-surgical cases, open abdomens, multi-system trauma, and endovascular procedures. Nurses will be required to titrate various medications including pressors, sedation, paralytics, and insulin. A charge nurse is present on each shift and may take an assignment based on staffing. A house supervisor is available 24/7. Nurse aides or patient care technicians are available with a ratio of 1:10. Intensivists are present in-house during the day and provide telemedicine support during off hours. Respiratory therapy is available 24/7. The unit utilizes vents, CPAP, and Bipap equipment. Telemetry/monitor techs are available, but nurses will be responsible for reading and interpreting their own strips. Shifts operate from 7 AM to 7:30 PM. Weekend requirements include working six shifts within a six-week period. Holiday requirements include working every other holiday. There is no call or standby requirement for nurses. Nurses may float to lower levels of care, taking on three patients in a step-down unit and 5-6 patients in a general medical environment. No specific dress code colors are mandated. Unit-specific orientation will be provided, which includes training with the charting system used in the unit.
