The unit is busy and operates as a Level 1 Trauma facility. Flexibility in scheduling is required as self-scheduling is not available. Every other weekend commitment is required. Successful candidates typically have 3 or more years of experience, previous travel experience, and a history of working in busy hospital environments. The unit consists of 12 beds with nurse-to-patient ratios of 1:2 or 1:3 depending on patient acuity and emergency admissions. Registered Nurses are expected to read their own telemetry strips as there are no monitor techs on the unit. There is a charge nurse on each shift who may take a full assignment, depending on staffing needs. Intermittent nurse aids or patient care techs are available based on census, with a ratio of 1:12 when present. An Intensivist is available in-house 24/7, and there are advanced practice providers on the unit continuously. Respiratory therapy services are also available on-site 24/7. Fourth shifts may be canceled based on the needs of the unit. Shifts are scheduled based on the unit's requirements, and there may be a requirement for weekend coverage.
