We are seeking an experienced Travel Registered Nurse (RN) for a high-acuity Stepdown unit caring for a diverse population of medical, neurological, surgical, and trauma patients.

The unit has 21 beds with a typical 3:1 nurse-to-patient ratio. This is a combined medical, neuro, neurosurgical, general/trauma surgical, and trauma Stepdown unit.

Patient Population & Clinical Experience

Common diagnoses and patient types include:

• COPD, CHF, diabetes, sepsis
• End-stage renal disease, including hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis
• Liver failure, pancreatitis, GI bleeds, and DKA
• Alcohol withdrawal and overdoses
• Complex pneumonia and other respiratory conditions
• Stroke and seizures
• Post-op craniotomy and lumbar drains/NPH trials
• Trauma and post-operative surgical patients
• Radical neck dissections and total laryngectomies
• Cardiac patients
• Patients requiring BiPAP, CPAP, and face-mask ventilation
• Tracheostomies and ventilator-dependent patients
• Chest tubes, G-tubes, NG tubes
• PICC, central, and arterial lines

Required Experience

Travel RNs must have:

• ICU or Intermediate/Stepdown experience
• Previous experience with 3:1 or 2:1 nurse-to-patient ratios
• Strong ICU/Intermediate nursing skills
• Trach and ventilator experience is required
• Progressive Care or Telemetry experience alone is not sufficient
• Experience managing high-acuity patients and titratable drips

Drips & Monitoring

RNs are required to titrate drips, including:

• Cardene
• Cardizem
• Amiodarone
• Dobutamine
• Heparin
• Low-dose or infrequently titrated vasopressors

All patients are on bedside Philips monitors. Telemetry technicians interpret strips, with RNs responsible for confirming the interpretation.

Staffing & Unit Support

• RN-to-patient ratio: 3:1
• PCTs: 2 per shift; when the unit is full, each PCT may have approximately 10 patients
• Charge Nurse: Dedicated/free charge when staffing permits; may take an assignment if staffing is limited
• House Supervisor: Available 24/7
• Travel RNs are first to float
• Floating may include ICU for RNs with extensive ICU experience, Stepdown, or General Medicine depending on qualifications and unit needs
