Registered Nurse (RN) – Step-Down Unit

 

Specialty: Step-Down / Progressive Care
Experience Required: 2+ years of recent Step-Down experience
Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours/week
Patient Ratio: 1:4–5
Medication System: Pyxis

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Step-Down RN with at least 2 years of recent Step-Down/Progressive Care experience. The ideal candidate should be comfortable caring for high-acuity cardiac, vascular, neurological, and respiratory patients requiring close monitoring and advanced nursing interventions.

Patient Population

Common diagnoses and patient conditions include:

  • Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
  • Post-heart catheterization patients
  • Post-vascular procedure patients
  • Respiratory failure requiring BiPAP, CPAP, or Vapotherm
  • Cardiac dysrhythmias
  • CVA / acute stroke patients

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive care for Step-Down/PCU patients
  • Maintain a 1:4–5 nurse-to-patient ratio
  • Perform continuous cardiac monitoring and dysrhythmia interpretation
  • Provide post-heart catheterization care
  • Manage and monitor TR bands
  • Perform post-vascular procedure assessments
  • Complete frequent vital signs and neurovascular checks
  • Manage patients requiring non-invasive respiratory support
  • Administer medications and emergency medications
  • Monitor and titrate cardiac drips
  • Perform and interpret 12-lead EKG/ECGs
  • Provide CVA and acute stroke care

Required Clinical Skills

Cardiac / Emergency

  • Cardiac monitoring
  • Dysrhythmia interpretation and management
  • 12-lead EKG/ECG
  • Emergency medication administration
  • Procedural sedation administration and monitoring
  • Cardiac drip titration

IV / Vascular

  • IV insertion and maintenance
  • PICC line management
  • Blood product administration

Neurological

  • CVA / Acute Stroke management
  • NIHSS assessment

Respiratory / Thoracic

  • BiPAP / CPAP management
  • Vapotherm experience
  • Assist with chest tube insertion/removal

Certifications Required

  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • NIHSS

Professional & Safety Skills

  • Infection prevention practices
  • Isolation precautions and proper PPE use
  • Phlebotomy
  • Strong assessment and critical-thinking skills
  • Ability to manage multiple high-acuity patients in a fast-paced environment

Schedule & Contract Details

  • 36 hours guaranteed per week
  • Every Other Weekend (EOW)
  • Every Other Holiday (EOH)
  • No blocked scheduling
  • Local candidates accepted

Local Rate

Important: Candidates living within 50 miles of the facility are considered local, and the bill rate is $15 lower than the travel rate.
