Key Responsibilities
Serve as the surgical first assist to the operating surgeon during congenital cardiac procedures, performing tasks such as tissue handling, wound closure, and hemostasis
Anticipate surgeon needs and ensure the operating room environment is optimized for efficiency and patient safety
Collaborate in preoperative assessment and preparation of patients undergoing congenital cardiac surgery
Support postoperative care including wound management, recovery monitoring, and patient education
Partner with surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, and OR staff to maintain seamless surgical workflows
Mentor and educate nursing staff on congenital cardiac procedures and first-assist techniques
Required Qualifications
Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in Maine
Completion of an accredited RNFA program
Minimum of 5 years of operating room experience, including at least 1–2 years in cardiac surgery
Active BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications
Proficiency in first-assist techniques and sterile field management
Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills in high-pressure surgical environments
Preferred Experience / Skills
CNOR certification
Demonstrated expertise in congenital cardiac surgery
Experience working with both pediatric and adult patients with congenital heart defects
