Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the surgical first assist to the operating surgeon during congenital cardiac procedures, performing tasks such as tissue handling, wound closure, and hemostasis
- Anticipate surgeon needs and ensure the operating room environment is optimized for efficiency and patient safety
- Collaborate in preoperative assessment and preparation of patients undergoing congenital cardiac surgery
- Support postoperative care including wound management, recovery monitoring, and patient education
- Partner with surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, and OR staff to maintain seamless surgical workflows
- Mentor and educate nursing staff on congenital cardiac procedures and first-assist techniques
Required Qualifications
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in Maine
- Completion of an accredited RNFA program
- Minimum of 5 years of operating room experience, including at least 1–2 years in cardiac surgery
- Active BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications
- Proficiency in first-assist techniques and sterile field management
- Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills in high-pressure surgical environments
Preferred Experience / Skills
- CNOR certification
- Demonstrated expertise in congenital cardiac surgery
- Experience working with both pediatric and adult patients with congenital heart defects
