This unit provides acute and intermediate care for surgical patient populations. Patients are admitted for various procedures including coronary artery bypass graft, cardiac valve repair, lung resection, and heart and lung transplant. The nurse-patient ratio is 4 or 5:1 in acute care and 3:1 in intermediate care. The unit consists of 28 beds, including acute-care and intermediate care beds. Intermediate care patients require more advanced monitoring than those in acute-care beds. Patients may include fresh lobectomies and those receiving thrombolytic therapy. Some patients come directly from recovery, while others are transferred from intensive care. The unit accommodates patients on select cardiac drips and arterial lines. Staff must work every other weekend and two out of three winter holidays. The facility utilizes an aggressive insulin management system and nurse-driven therapies. Candidates must adhere to float policy as needed. Experience with interpretation of dysrhythmias and telemetry management is beneficial. The unit supports various interdisciplinary services including therapy, pharmacy, and rapid response teams. Patient diagnoses may include post-operative care for heart and thoracic surgeries. Candidates must have the ability to perform ECGs independently. Additional skills in managing arterial lines and chest tubes are advantageous. This role requires working in a split-unit environment with distinct patient ratios. Candidates with previous experience in similar settings are preferred. A nursing degree is preferred.
