Description:
This position involves providing care in a step-down unit.
The unit focuses on neuro trauma patients, including strokes, seizures, and spinal injuries.
There are 28 beds on the unit.
Nurse-to-patient ratios during the day are 1:4-5 and at night are 1:5-6, depending on acuity.
Common diagnoses include guillain barre, myasthenia gravis, and trauma orthopedic injuries.
RNs must be comfortable titrating drips, with common titles being heparin, nitro, and insulin.
Charge nurses take a full team assignment at night, while days take a smaller assignment.
There are nurse aides available on the unit, with ratios of 1:9 during the day and 1:12 at night.
RT equipment available includes vents, trachs, CPAP, and BIPAP.
There are central monitors for telemetry, and RNs are required to read their own strips.
Self-scheduling is available, managing to balance shifts six weeks in advance.
RNs are required to work every other weekend and typically two to three holidays during winter.
Floating to different units may be required.
Nurses can wear any solid color scrubs while on duty.
Unit-specific orientation includes one shift of general training and one shift with a preceptor.
