Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Stepdown Care Unit Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-hour days Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: 1 year License: Active Illinois license required Certifications: BLS required; ACLS recommended Must-Have: Travel RNs must have ICU/Intermediate (Stepdown) experience with a nurse to patient ratio of 3 to 1 or 2 to 1. Experience with tracheostomy and ventilator patients is necessary. Description: The Stepdown Care Unit has 20 beds, which consist of 8 private rooms and semi-private rooms. The patient-to-nurse ratio is 3 to 1. Common diagnoses and types of patients include those with COPD, CHF, diabetes, sepsis, renal issues, DKA, alcohol withdrawal, overdoses, pneumonia, and other respiratory conditions. Nurses will manage patients requiring Bipap, Cpap, face mask ventilation, tracheostomy care, chest tubes, G-tubes, NG tubes, PICC lines, and central lines. Nurses are required to titrate drips, including Cardene, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Dobutamine, Heparin, and low dose Vasopressors. A charge nurse is available on each shift, who may take on patients if staffing levels are not ideal. Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) support the team with a ratio of 2 PCTs per shift. All patients are on bedside monitors, and Telemetry Technicians interpret strips while RNs confirm readings. Shifts are 12 hours, from 7 AM to 7 PM. Weekend commitments include every other weekend, with holiday requirements being every other holiday rotation. Floating is required for travel RNs, with a preference for floating to other Stepdown or General Medicine units as needed. RNs are expected to wear scrubs in any color. A comprehensive orientation includes training on the electronic health record system and unit-specific guidance.
