Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Stepdown Care Unit Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12H Nights Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum 1 year of ICU/Intermediate (Stepdown) experience License: Active Illinois license or confirmation that application process has been initiated Certifications: BLS required; ACLS recommended Must-Have: Experience in ICU/Intermediate nursing skills Trach and ventilator experience Description: This position involves care for patients with a wide range of medical conditions. The patient-to-nurse ratio is typically 3 to 1. Common diagnoses include COPD, CHF, DM, sepsis, renal issues, DKA, alcohol withdrawal, overdoses, pneumonia, and other respiratory conditions. Some patients may require Bipap, Cpap, or face mask ventilation. Experience with trached patients on ventilators, chest tubes, G tubes, NG tubes, PICC lines, and central lines is necessary. RNs will be required to titrate drips; common titratable drips include Cardene, Cardizem, Amio, Dobutamine, Heparin, and Vasopressors. There is a charge nurse available on each shift, and they may take an assignment if staffing is not ideal. Patient Care Technicians are available to assist, typically caring for up to 10 patients each if the unit is full. All patients will be on bedside monitors. Telemetry technicians interpret strips, while RNs confirm readings. Shifts are conducted in a 12-hour format, either from 7 PM to 7 AM or 7 AM to 7 PM. Staff members will be scheduled in coordination with the unit supervisor. Every other weekend and holiday shifts are required. Travel RNs may float to other stepdown or general medical units as necessary. The dress code is any color scrubs. Unit-specific orientation includes training for electronic health record systems and unit practices. The working environment is in an acute care setting.
