Description: The position is within a stepdown unit. Certifications required include BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS. A driver's license is required for submission. Artificial nails are prohibited in all departments providing patient care. Refusal to remove nails will lead to termination of contract. Registered Nurses must pass an exam during orientation. The exam is open book and covers skills learned. Candidates are provided with all necessary resources to pass. A 90% score is required to pass; failure to do so will result in termination. The unit has 33 beds. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4-5. Common diagnoses include young adults through geriatrics, sepsis, STEMI, CHF, chest pain, COVID, stroke, renal failure, COPD, DKA, and patients with complex medical issues, including multisystem failure. Registered Nurses are required to titrate drips. Common titratable and/or set rate drips include Heparin, Amiodarone, Cardizem, Nitroglycerin, IV antibiotics, and Insulin. There is a Charge Nurse on each shift, who does not take an assignment. Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) are present on the unit with a 1:10 ratio. The availability of CNAs fluctuates based on unit census. Respiratory equipment includes BiPAP, Airvo, and High Flow. Registered Nurses are required to read and interpret their own telemetry strips. Registered Nurses may float to MedSurg, Inpatient Rehab, or Skilled Care. The dress code for Registered Nurses is navy blue. Shifts and scheduling will be managed by unit schedulers. The unit experiences busy patient flow. Patients are admitted and discharged within the same six-hour timeframe. Completion of shift change occurs concurrently. Successful attributes for nurses on this unit include a strong sense of teamwork, a friendly and positive attitude, and engagement in a positive patient experience. Commitment to bedside report and hourly rounding is essential. In the future, the unit will transition to virtual nursing, which will increase the nurse-to-patient ratio to 1:6. Each nurse will be assigned their own CNA. The Charge RN will not have a patient assignment, and the virtual nurse will assist with patient admissions, discharges, education, rounding, care plans, and more. Time-off requests must be submitted upfront, with a limit of seven or fewer days per contract. Additional requests will not be approved after submissions. The hospital reserves the right to cancel up to four shifts per 13-week assignment.
