Job Title: Stepdown RN Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: PCU (Progressive Care Unit) Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-Hour Nights Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum of 2 years License: Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS Must-Have: Competence in arterial lines, ability to titrate drips, flexible and willing to learn. Description: Candidates must not be employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any associated facilities. Artificial nails are prohibited in all departments providing patient care. Refusal to remove artificial nails will lead to contract termination. Candidates are required to pass a weekly exam during orientation. This exam is open book and covers skills learned. A 90% is required to pass the exam. Blocked scheduling is not approved unless it is only for weekends. Shared care or similar schedule duo requests will not be accepted. If placed on call, candidates will have 30 minutes to arrive when called back. The unit has an average daily census of 24 patients with 40 beds available. Staffing ratios are 1:4-5 for both day and night shifts. Common patient diagnoses include cardiac, dialysis, cancer, vascular, sepsis, respiratory issues, strokes, post-stent, and renal failure. RNs are required to titrate drips such as heparin, nitroglycerin, dopamine, cardizem, amiodarone, and insulin. Each shift has a charge nurse who does take an assignment. Nurse aides or patient care technicians are present on the unit at a ratio of 1:12. RNs must troubleshoot high flow oxygen equipment. RNs are responsible for reading and interpreting telemetry strips. Shifts are from 0630 to 1830 and 1830 to 0630. Weekend requirements include every other weekend. Holiday requirements are a minimum of 2 holidays during the contract period. Floating to med-surg or ICU to take PCU acuity patients is required. Scrub color and dress code is navy blue. Unit specific orientation is one day. Successful candidates will be team players with good communication skills. The unit serves diverse cultural populations. Requests for time off must be provided upfront and must be 7 or fewer days for the contract duration. Additional time off requests will not be approved. The hospital can cancel up to 4 shifts per 13-week assignment. The charting system used is EPIC. A BSN is not required. The trauma level is 2. This position is in an acute care setting. The division is nursing. Shift notes indicate 12-hour nights with requirements for ACLS, BLS, and NIHSS certifications.
