The unit primarily cares for adult patients recovering from traumatic injuries requiring surgical intervention. The nurse-to-patient ratio is typically 1:4, flexing up to 1:5 as necessary. Telemetry monitoring is available for up to 14 patients. Patients are typically hemodynamically stable. Common patient cases include injuries from gunshot wounds, assaults, motor vehicle crashes, and falls. The role requires collaboration with interdisciplinary teams, including IV teams, physical therapy, and pharmacy services. Specific skills include managing IVs, interpreting dysrhythmias, and performing wound care. The schedule includes 36 hours per week and requires the completion of six weekend shifts every six weeks. Additional experience in Trauma Level I or II is preferred. Travelers are expected to float to other units as needed while maintaining competency in provided tasks.
