Job Title: Travel Nurse - PCU Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Progressive Care Unit Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 19:00 - 07:00 Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum 2 years of acute care hospital Stepdown/PCU experience License: Registered Nurse License Certifications: BLS & ACLS required Must-Have: Candidates without these skills will not be considered for the role. Minimum 1 year of acute care hospital Stepdown/PCU experience. BLS & ACLS certifications required. Description: This position involves caring for patients in the Progressive Care Unit. The unit has a capacity of 34 beds, distributed across two floors. Staffing consists of a charge nurse without patient assignments, staff nurses, and Patient Care Technicians, adjusting according to patient census. Patient ratios may vary from 1:3-4, occasionally flexing to 1:5-6 with Med/Surg overflow. Travel nurses will be expected to handle patient ratios of 1:5-6. Equipment used includes bladder scanners, lab specimen labeling systems, EKG machines, and various lifts. Experience with modalities of higher oxygen delivery and respiratory support is preferred. Knowledge of chest tube management, tracheostomy management, and NG/Dobhoff placement is essential. Procedures performed in this unit include wound and drain care, lab draws from central lines, and blood product transfusions. The nurse will manage patients on heparin drips, PCA pumps, and anti-arrhythmic drips as needed. Strong critical thinking skills are necessary for identifying decompensating patients. A strong emphasis on infection prevention for an immunocompromised patient population is important. The ideal candidate is reliable, adaptable, flexible, and a strong team player. Candidates should thrive in a fast-paced environment and be comfortable asking questions.
