The unit operates 24/7 and consists of 38 patient bays. Daily patient census averages between 70 and 90. The nurse will recover patients from a variety of surgical procedures, including neurosurgery, ENT, plastics, orthopedics, thoracic, vascular, trauma, general surgery, colorectal, GYN, urological, electrophysiology, interventional radiology, and transplant, with the exception of open heart surgeries and liver transplants. The population includes adults, occasional adolescents, and geriatric patients. Critical care experience is mandatory, as some patients may require artificial airways, invasive monitoring including intracranial pressure (ICP), transfusions, and vasoactive drugs. It is essential to have experience with drains, vasoactive drips, mechanical ventilation, and recovery from general anesthesia. Candidates should be ready to work with high acuity patients, as 80% of surgical patients are admitted post-operatively. Preoperative assessment and preparation for first cases may be required, particularly for night shift nurses. Candidates must demonstrate EKG rhythm analysis capability, and be proficient in transfusion and IV starting. The unit has its own patient care and transport team to support staff during recovery. All travelers will float within the service line.
