PICU RN — Charlotte, NC

Assignment Details

  • Shift: Nights, 3x12s, 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM (shift range noted as 0645–1915 / 1845–0715)
  • Contract: 13 weeks, 36 guaranteed hours/week
  • Radius rule: permanent address must be 50+ miles from the facility
  • Weekend rotation: 2 Fridays, 2 Saturdays, 2 Sundays, and 2 Mondays every 6-week schedule (can be grouped or separate)
  • No call for travelers — if PICU can't utilize them, may float to PCVICU, Peds Progressive, NICU, or general Peds units within the health system
  • Holidays: travelers work 75% of holidays; unit requires eve and day of every other holiday while contracted
  • RTO requires manager approval
  • Scrub color: Navy; free parking

Requirements

  • 2 years of strong, high-acuity Pediatric ICU experience; first-time travelers accepted
  • BLS and PALS required
  • Skills: Epic, Arctic Sun, EVDs, Camino (ICP/temp monitoring), Belmont Rapid Infuser, vasoactive drip titration, invasive line management (arterial/CVP), aseptic technique, ventilator/trach management, HFOV management, g-tube/j-tube/feeding tube management, chest tubes, epidurals, PCAs, sedation/analgesic drip management, Foley management, bedside procedures, discharge skills, and CRRT experience

Unit Overview

  • 24-bed PICU; average census 21–23
  • Ratios vary by acuity: 2:1, 1:1, 1:2
  • Common diagnoses: respiratory, trauma (including penetrating and non-accidental trauma), DKA, seizures, neurosurgical, acute/chronic renal failure, orthopedic, surgical, transplants (kidney and whole/partial liver), complex medical, blood disorders
  • Full unit support: charge nurse, health care tech, unit secretary, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, resource nurse, RT, intensivist, residents, and APP all in-house or 24/7
  • Float requirement: Pediatric CVICU, NICU, Neonatal PCU, and General Peds as needed (competency for CVICU float discussed at interview)
  • EMR: Epic; equipment includes Alaris/Medfusion pumps, Omnicell, Philips monitors, Belmont Rapid Infuser, AccuVein, PIV ultrasound, Arctic Sun, Camino, EV-1000 Vigileo, i-STAT, and Accuryn
  • Orientation: NEO plus 2 days departmental
