Shift Times: 6:45 AM – 6:45 PM / 6:45 PM – 6:45 AM

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Pediatric CVICU Registered Nurse to join a high-acuity pediatric cardiovascular intensive care team at a major teaching hospital.

The ideal candidate will have at least 2 years of Pediatric Cardiac ICU experience in a comparable high-acuity facility and be comfortable caring for critically ill pediatric patients ranging from infants through adolescents.

Unit Information

  • 20-bed Pediatric CVICU
  • Unit is divided into two 10-bed sections.
  • Centralized nurses' station.
  • Highest-acuity patients are located directly behind the nurses' station.
  • Patient population ranges from 0–18 years old.
  • Very high-acuity cardiovascular patient population.

Patient Population

Common patient populations and diagnoses include:

  • Congenital heart disease
  • Fresh post-operative open-heart patients
  • Pre- and post-heart transplant patients
  • Post-cardiac catheterization patients
  • Ventricular assist devices (VADs)
  • ECMO
  • Impella
  • Dialysis
  • Aquadex / renal replacement therapy
  • Critically ill pediatric cardiac patients

Required Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of Pediatric Cardiac ICU/CVICU experience in a similar-acuity facility.
  • Experience caring for fresh post-operative open-heart patients.
  • Pediatric cardiac transplant experience.
  • Experience with:
    • ECMO
    • Impella
    • Aquadex / renal replacement therapy
  • Epic experience required.
  • Must be willing and clinically competent to float to PICU as discussed during the interview.

Required Certifications

  • BLS
  • PALS
  • NIHSS

Patient Ratios

Ratios vary based on patient acuity:

  • 2:1
  • 1:1
  • 1:2

Unit Support

Travelers will have access to a strong multidisciplinary support structure, including:

  • Charge Nurse
  • Resource Nurse
  • Unit Secretary
  • Health Care Technician
  • IV/VAT Team
  • In-house Phlebotomy
  • Respiratory Therapy 24/7
  • Cardiologist 24/7
  • Intensivist 24/7

One Health Care Technician is available each day to assist with unit secretary functions and nursing support such as runners and bathing.

Equipment & Technology

  • EMR: Epic – Required
  • IV Pumps: Alaris
  • Medication Dispensing: Omnicell
  • Patient Monitoring: Philips
  • Centralized and bedside monitoring

Floating

Travelers may be required to float based on departmental needs to:

  • PICU
  • NICU
  • General Pediatrics

Schedule & Call

Shift: Rotating 12-hour shifts

  • Days: 6:45 AM – 6:45 PM
  • Nights: 6:45 PM – 6:45 AM

Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or fewer based on unit needs, typically Friday/Saturday/Sunday.

Call: May be required based on staffing and scheduling needs.

Holiday Requirement: Travelers are expected to work approximately 75% of holidays, with the unit typically requiring every other holiday.

  • New Employee Orientation (NEO)
  • 2 days of departmental orientation

  • Schedule Cycle: Approximately every 6 weeks
  • Radius requirement: Traveler's permanent address must be at least 50 miles from the home unit.
