Travel Registered Nurse (RN) – ECMO Specialist | Columbia, South Carolina

ECMO-trained Registered Nurses can bring their critical care expertise to a high-acuity Mechanical Circulatory Support team in Columbia, South Carolina. This 13-week travel RN assignment is designed for an ECMO Specialist who is confident managing complex circuits and caring for critically ill adults with advanced cardiac and respiratory support needs. You will work alongside an interdisciplinary team in a city known for its welcoming atmosphere, scenic riverfront, historic character, and vibrant cultural and dining scene.

Travel RN Job Details

  • Assignment Type: 13-week travel nursing assignment
  • Estimated Weekly Pay: $2,360–$2,480
  • Location: Columbia, South Carolina
  • Healthcare Setting: Mechanical Circulatory Support / ECMO unit
  • Patient Population: Adults with complex cardiac and respiratory conditions
  • Schedule: Night shift, 12-hour shifts, approximately 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.
  • Hours: 36 hours per week
  • Patient Ratio: Approximately 1:2
  • Floating: May float to qualified ICU, CICU, or CVICU assignments based on staffing needs

ECMO Registered Nurse Job Requirements

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure
  • At least 2 years of recent ECMO Specialist experience with circuit management
  • ECMO Specialist-specific training required
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications
  • At least 1 year of recent Epic electronic medical record experience
  • Three or more years of CVICU or ICU experience preferred
  • CES-A or E-AEC certification preferred
  • LVAD experience or certification preferred
  • Strong experience caring for ventilated patients and managing advanced cardiac support devices

ECMO Nursing Responsibilities

  • Provide specialized critical care nursing for patients supported by VA, VV, and V-PA ECMO
  • Manage ECMO circuits and follow established nurse-driven ECMO protocols
  • Monitor and care for patients with cardiogenic shock, post-cardiotomy shock, acute respiratory distress syndrome, respiratory failure, and other forms of multisystem organ dysfunction
  • Care for patients receiving Impella, intra-aortic balloon pump, ProTek/RVAD, LVAD, and other mechanical circulatory support therapies
  • Titrate cardiac and vasoactive infusions, administer emergency medications, and manage continuous sedation and neuromuscular blockade
  • Perform arterial line, central line, pulmonary artery catheter, CVP, FloTrac/Vigileo, and advanced hemodynamic monitoring
  • Interpret arterial blood gases, dysrhythmias, coagulation studies, and other critical laboratory results
  • Provide ventilator management, airway care, suctioning, high-flow oxygen support, and respiratory failure interventions
  • Support CRRT or CVVHD, blood product administration, massive transfusion protocols, and temperature management therapies
  • Collaborate with physicians, respiratory therapists, perfusion and ECMO teams, pharmacy, rehabilitation, and other interdisciplinary partners
  • Document care accurately in Epic and maintain compliance with unit and safety protocols
