Pediatric Progressive Care RN – 13 Weeks | 36 Hours

On Call: None

Unit Details

  • 11–20 beds
  • RN Ratio:1:4
  • Post-Renal Transplant Ratio:1:3
  • Pediatric Stepdown / Progressive Care
  • Specialties include:
    • Renal / nephrology
    • Post-op posterior spinal fusion
    • Medical-Surgical
    • Telemetry
    • Chronic complex pediatric care

Patient Population

The unit cares for a broad pediatric population including:

  • Asthma and bronchiolitis
  • Pneumonia
  • Failure to thrive
  • Cerebral palsy and developmental delay
  • G-tube dependent and medically complex children
  • Viral illnesses and dehydration
  • Short-gut syndrome and Crohn’s disease
  • Renal/nephrology patients
  • Post-operative spinal fusion patients
  • Tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy
  • Appendectomy
  • G-tube placement/takedown
  • Medical patients with behavioral health/SI needs, including post-ingestion/overdose management
  •  

Strong peripheral IV insertion skills are highly encouraged. A vascular access team is available for difficult access. PICC insertion certification is not required, but previous PICC line care/management is preferred.

 

Floating

Must be willing to float to other pediatric general care areas, including:

  • General Med-Surg
  • Neuroscience
  • Hem/Onc
  • Inpatient Rehab
  • Overflow units
  • Medical-Psychiatric Med-Surg

Orientation

  • Approximately 1 week upon arrival
  • 1 administrative education day
  • 2 orientation shifts with an RN
  • EMR class also scheduled
  • Pre-start requirements include BBP and medication testing
