The patient population includes those with congenital heart differences who have undergone surgery. The unit supports medical management of pre-transplant and post-transplant patients, as well as those s/p cath lab. Other conditions managed include patients on ventricular assist devices, ECMO, Impella, dialysis, and renal replacement therapy. Patient ratios vary based on acuity, typically ranging from 1:1 to 2:1. There are no nursing assistants, but 1 healthcare technician supports unit secretary duties and nursing needs. Charge nurses operate in a free-floating capacity. Phlebotomy services are in-house, but most patients will have central lines. An IV/VAT team is available. Respiratory therapy is available 24/7. Cardiologists and intensivists are on staff around the clock. Telemetry monitoring is centralized, with bedside monitoring also available. Nurses may float to the PICU, NICU, and general pediatrics when needed. Team culture emphasizes teamwork, trust, and accountability. The scheduling expectations include every other weekend and a call requirement based on previous dates. Travelers are expected to work 75% of the holidays.
