Behavioral Health Nurse
General Information:
This position involves providing care to both pediatric and adult patients in a behavioral health setting. Candidates should be prepared to float between pediatric and adult units as needed. The facility is a free-standing acute inpatient facility, which contracts with an emergency department nearby. All patients must be medically cleared prior to admission.
Patient Types:
- Pediatric patients (ages 5-18): Common diagnoses include Eating Disorders, Depression, Suicidal Ideation, Anxiety, Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and Gender Dysphoria.
- Adult patients (18+ including geriatric): Often diagnosed with Schizophrenia, Major Depressive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, as well as Eating Disorders, Suicidal Ideation, and Anxiety.
- No forensic patients or inmates are admitted; however, seclusion rooms are utilized when necessary.
- Occasional care for patients with Substance Use Disorder or those undergoing detoxification, provided they are medically cleared.
Patient Ratios:
- Day Shift: RN ratio of 1:5-6; Night Shift: RN ratio of 1:13 with additional resource support.
- Pediatric Psych Techs: Day - 6; Night - 2.
- Adult Psych Techs: Day - 2; Night - 2.
Required Certifications:
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- MOAB (Management of Aggressive Behavior), to be obtained during orientation
- ME State License
Skills Required:
- Experience with de-escalation techniques and physical restraints (chemical restraints are not used).
- Proficiency in medication administration and documentation.
- Comfort in leading group sessions.
- Opportunity to take on Charge Nurse duties, although this is not mandatory.
Support on the Unit:
- Director of Nursing / Chief Nursing Officer
- Nurse Manager available during the day
- House Administrator on-site overnight and weekends
- Charge Nurse may have patient assignments
- Psych Techs and additional support staff
- On-site Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatrist for daily rounds and on-call assistance
- Occupational Therapist available daily
- Security personnel present on-site
Charting System/Equipment:
- Cerner
- Pyxis for medication management
Orientation:
The orientation period consists of the first week (Monday-Friday) working day shifts, followed by the second week with 12-hour shifts as scheduled.
Scheduling and Work Expectations:
- Weekend rotation: every other weekend (Saturday/Sunday)
- No guaranteed block scheduling
- Overtime opportunities available
- Holiday work required as part of rotation
- Modified self-scheduling for preferred shifts; managers will adjust based on coverage needs
Additional Notes:
- Professional attire: any solid color scrubs

- Ability to manage patient escalations with a "code leader" structure that assigns roles during situations.
- Opportunities for additional training in de-escalation techniques during scenario-based training sessions every other week.
