Travel PCU RN – Jewish Hospital | 5 West
Unit / Patient Population
- 21-bed mixed-acuity PCU/Med-Tele unit
- Average census: ~19
- Typically 3–5 PCU patients
- Common diagnoses: GI, liver cirrhosis, CIWA, general medical, IV drug use, occasional trachs
- Cerner EMR
Requirements
- 1+ year acute-care Med/Surg-Tele experience with PCU float experience accepted
- First-time travelers accepted
- BLS, NIHSS, CPI
- Key skills:
- Heparin
- Fixed-rate Amiodarone
- PCA pumps
- High-flow oxygen & BiPAP
- Chest tube management
- Wound VACs & JP drains
- IV starts & venipuncture
- Trach care preferred
Ratios / Staffing
- RN: 1:5, occasionally 1:6 for assignments without PCU patients
- Higher-ratio assignments rotated among staff
- 1–2 LPNs during days, typically 1:5–1:6
- 2 CNAs days and nights, approximately 10–11 patients each
- Charge RN takes patients on both shifts
- Nurses draw routine/daily labs and call consults at night
Schedule
- 12-hour shifts | 6:45–7:15
- Every other weekend
- No call
- Must work 1 major winter holiday: Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, or New Year's Day
- Schedule released in 6-week blocks, approximately 4–5 weeks ahead
- Block scheduling not guaranteed
- RTO requires manager approval
Floating
- First to float
- May float to other mixed-acuity units or Med/Surg floors
- Float ratios may be 1:5–1:6

- 24/7 RT, Hospitalist & Intensivist
- IV/VAT team
- Rapid Response & Code teams
- Resource nurses
- Central telemetry monitoring
- Plum ICU Medical pumps
