  • Schedule: 3 shifts per week, 12-hour day shifts
  • Hours: 36 hours per week; a 48-hour commitment may be considered
  • Weekend and Holiday Coverage: Every other weekend and holiday expected
  • Unit: Progressive Care Unit (PCU)/Intermediate Care
  • Patient Population: Adults and geriatric patients
  • Typical Ratios: 1:3–5, based on staffing needs
  • Additional Assignment Expectations: May float to medical-surgical and telemetry units; travel candidates must reside at least 50 miles from the assignment location

PCU Registered Nurse Job Requirements

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia or a compact state
  • At least 2 years of recent Registered Nurse experience, including progressive care, stepdown, intermediate care, or comparable acute-care experience
  • Recent acute-care hospital experience required
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale certification
  • Advanced cardiac rhythm interpretation and dysrhythmia knowledge; successful completion of a dysrhythmia examination is required
  • Experience recognizing early signs of patient deterioration and responding with sound clinical judgment
  • Cardiac drip and titratable medication experience preferred
  • Travel nursing experience preferred
  • Preceptor or charge nurse experience preferred
  • Experience with telemetry, chest tubes, wound vacs, PCA pumps, BiPAP, high-flow nasal cannula, and hemodynamic monitoring preferred
  • Ability to use electronic health records and clinical communication systems; Epic experience preferred
  • Strong communication, teamwork, critical-thinking, and patient-advocacy skills

Progressive Care Unit RN Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive initial and ongoing assessments for patients with complex medical and cardiac conditions.
  • Develop, prioritize, implement, and evaluate individualized plans of care using the nursing process.
  • Care for patients with conditions such as congestive heart failure, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, gastrointestinal bleeding, respiratory failure, COPD, pneumonia, sepsis, and STEMI.
  • Monitor telemetry and interpret advanced cardiac rhythms while identifying changes that require immediate intervention.
  • Administer medications, including titratable cardiac drips, safely and in accordance with current standards and policies.
  • Manage patients requiring chest tubes, wound vacs, PCA pumps, noninvasive ventilation, high-flow oxygen, and other progressive-care therapies.
  • Recognize and respond rapidly to clinical deterioration, escalating concerns and coordinating interventions with the interdisciplinary care team.
  • Provide patient and family education, emotional support, and guidance throughout hospitalization.
  • Coordinate care across departments and collaborate with providers, patient care technicians, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Promote patient safety, privacy, infection prevention, cultural sensitivity, and evidence-based practice.
  • Float to medical-surgical and telemetry units as needed while maintaining safe, patient-centered care.
