Travel Nursing Job Details

  • Healthcare Setting: Progressive Care Unit (PCU)/Stepdown; adult acute care

  • Contract Duration: 13 weeks, with assignment dates through January 25, 2027
  • Schedule: Three 12-hour night shifts per week
  • Weekend and Holiday Expectations: Every other weekend and holiday rotation
  • Patient Ratios: Typically 1:3–5, based on staffing needs
  • Unit Details: 29 beds with the capability to expand to 37 beds
  • Floating: May float to medical-surgical/telemetry units

Progressive Care Unit RN Job Requirements

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia or a valid compact-state license
  • At least 2 years of recent acute-care nursing experience, including progressive care, PCU, stepdown, or intermediate care experience
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale certifications
  • Successful completion of a dysrhythmia examination
  • Strong critical-thinking skills and the ability to recognize early signs of patient deterioration
  • Advanced cardiac rhythm interpretation experience
  • Experience with cardiac drips, including titratable infusions, preferred
  • Travel nursing experience preferred
  • Preceptor or charge nurse experience preferred
  • Experience with EPIC or another electronic health record system preferred
  • Ability to care for adult and geriatric patients with complex medical and cardiac conditions
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced acute-care environment and safely manage patients requiring frequent assessment and intervention

PCU Travel RN Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive initial and ongoing assessments for patients requiring progressive care monitoring.
  • Develop, prioritize, implement, and evaluate individualized plans of care using the nursing process.
  • Monitor patients with complex conditions such as heart failure, STEMI, sepsis, respiratory failure, COPD, pneumonia, gastrointestinal bleeding, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, and urinary tract infections.
  • Interpret cardiac rhythms and respond promptly to dysrhythmias and changes in patient condition.
  • Administer medications and manage cardiac and other titratable infusions according to established protocols.
  • Provide care for patients requiring telemetry, noninvasive ventilation, high-flow nasal cannula, chest tubes, wound vacs, PCA pumps, and other advanced equipment.
  • Recognize early signs of deterioration and initiate timely, evidence-based interventions, including escalation of care when appropriate.
  • Coordinate care with physicians, respiratory therapy, rehabilitation services, care management, and other members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatments, medications, recovery, and safety.
  • Promote patient safety, infection prevention, privacy, dignity, and effective communication throughout the care experience.
  • Document assessments, interventions, patient responses, and outcomes accurately in the electronic health record.
  • Support unit operations by floating to medical-surgical/telemetry assignments and contributing as a preceptor or charge nurse when needed.
