Registered Nurse (RN) - Progressive Care Unit (PCU)

Job Overview

This position is for a Registered Nurse in a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) that operates similarly to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The role involves caring for patients with varying complexities, including those requiring advanced monitoring and treatment.

Required Skills and Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience required.
• Experience with arterial lines and titrating vasoactive drips.
• Ability to manage and interpret telemetry and dysrhythmias.
• Familiarity with rapid response teams and IV insulin protocols.
• Competence in blood product administration and central/peripheral line management.
• Experience with patient diagnoses such as respiratory distress, unstable hemodynamics, and post-operative care.
• Knowledge of special procedures including use of chest tubes, CPAP/BIPAP, and non-invasive airway management.
• Required certifications: ACLS, BCLS, NIH Stroke Scale.
• Experience with bedside telemetry monitoring.

Job Responsibilities

• Provide high-quality nursing care to patients in a PCU setting.
• Manage patient treatment plans and medications, including pressor drips.
• Monitor and interpret telemetry, responding to patient needs promptly.
• Administer patient care under strict protocols, including isolation precautions.
• Participate in team rounds and collaborate with healthcare professionals.
• Float to the sister unit as necessary to ensure patient care continuity.

Scheduling and Availability

• 12-hour night shifts with the possibility of working 36 or 48 hours per week.
• Weekend availability required every other weekend.
• RTO (Request Time Off) is limited to 7 days maximum.
• No block scheduling is available; individual scheduling is managed by Nursing Management.

Unit Details

The unit operates with a target patient-to-nurse ratio of 1:3-4 and accommodates patients with diverse needs, including complex medical, surgical, and post-operative care. The nursing staff is expected to utilize advanced skills in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.

Equipment and Systems

• Utilizes Pyxis for medication management.
• Employs Epic for electronic health records.
• Requires proficiency with bedside telemetry monitors and patient care devices.

Attire

Scrubs must be navy, white, or a combination of the two.

Orientation and Training

All travelers will undergo a mandatory hospital orientation in their first week, including daily classes. Candidates must pass EKG testing prior to starting in this specialty.
