Registered Nurse (RN) - PCU

Job Overview

We are seeking a dedicated Registered Nurse (RN) for a progressive care unit (PCU) that offers a dynamic and fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in patient care with an emphasis on managing higher acuity patients.

Position Details

  • Shift: 12-hour days (06:45 - 19:15)
  • Target Ratios: 1:4-5, with potential for 1:6 in extreme situations
  • Contract Length: Minimum of 13 weeks
  • Required to Float: Floating to like units is necessary
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Orientation: 24 hours

Patient Population

The unit serves patients with various respiratory conditions including:

  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Pneumonia (PNA)
  • Respiratory distress
  • COVID-19
  • Influenza
  • Pulmonary Embolisms (PE)

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years in a similar role
  • Traveler Experience: Will accept first-time travelers
  • Certifications:
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
    • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Skills:
    • IV starts
    • Ventilator management
    • Telemetry monitoring and interpretation of dysrhythmias
    • CPAP/BiPAP management

Preferred Skills & Qualifications

  • Certifications: National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS)

Unit Details & Resources

This unit operates with a higher acuity than standard medical-surgical units, supported by a variety of resources including:

  • Team lead nurses for supervision
  • Two respiratory therapists on duty
  • An assistant nurse manager available during shifts
  • Access to an Admission/Discharge nurse
  • Vascular access team on call
  • Rapid response team and code team
  • Behavioral health team for additional support

Special Equipment

The unit utilizes equipment including:

  • Chest tubes
  • Intravenous drips such as dopamine, Cardizem, and Heparin
  • Ventilators, trachs, CPAP, and BiPAP machines

Documentation & Software

The unit uses the following systems:

  • Pyxis for medication distribution
  • Electronic health record system (EPIC)
  • SBAR for communication

Additional Notes

It is mandatory to pass EKG testing prior to starting in this specialty. Please plan accordingly.
