Position Overview:

Pikeville Medical Center is seeking an experienced Surgical/Orthopedic Registered Nurse for an ASAP 8-week travel assignment. The RN will provide comprehensive care to surgical and orthopedic patients throughout the perioperative recovery period, including pre- and post-operative care, pain management, mobility assistance, wound care, and patient education.

  • Day: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM
  • Night: 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM
• Schedule: 12-hour shifts × 4 days/week
• Hours: 48 hours/week
• Work Week: Sunday – Saturday
• Payroll: Bi-weekly
• Experience: Minimum 1 year of travel nursing experience
• Orientation: Billable

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide direct nursing care to patients recovering from surgical and orthopedic procedures.
• Perform comprehensive assessments and monitor patients for changes in condition.
• Provide pre-operative and post-operative nursing care according to patient needs and facility protocols.
• Monitor surgical patients for potential complications and promptly communicate changes in condition.
• Administer medications, IV therapies, and treatments safely and accurately.
• Provide effective post-operative pain management and evaluate patient response to treatment.
• Perform wound assessments, dressing changes, and monitor surgical incisions for signs of infection or complications.
• Monitor drains, tubes, IV lines, and other post-operative equipment as applicable.
• Assist orthopedic patients with mobility, positioning, transfers, and activities of daily living while maintaining appropriate safety precautions.
• Follow ordered activity restrictions, weight-bearing precautions, and other orthopedic care plans.
• Support patients recovering from orthopedic injuries and surgical procedures while promoting safe mobility and recovery.
• Assist with admission, transfer, and discharge processes.
• Educate patients and families regarding medications, wound care, mobility precautions, treatment plans, and discharge instructions.
• Collaborate with physicians, surgeons, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and other members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation of assessments, interventions, medications, and patient responses.
• Follow infection-control procedures, fall-prevention measures, patient-safety standards, and facility policies.
• Prioritize care effectively while managing multiple surgical and orthopedic patients in an acute-care environment.

Candidate Requirements:

• Active RN license applicable to the assignment
• Minimum 1 year of travel nursing experience
• Strong Surgical/Orthopedic nursing experience
• Experience providing pre- and post-operative patient care
• Knowledge of surgical wound care and post-operative monitoring
• Experience with pain management and medication administration
• Ability to safely manage patients with mobility and orthopedic restrictions
• Strong assessment, communication, documentation, and clinical judgment skills
• Comfortable working 12-hour shifts

Compensation & Facility Terms:

• Overtime: 1.5× for travel nurses working over 48 hours/week
• Call-Back: 1.5×
• On-Call Rate: $2.05/hour
• Holiday Rate: 1.5×
• Payroll: Bi-weekly
• Orientation: Billable

Holidays Observed:

The 1.5× holiday rate applies from 12:00 AM to 11:59 PM on:

• New Year's Day
• Memorial Day
• July 4th
• Labor Day
• Thanksgiving Day
• Christmas Day
