Registered Nurse, Operating Room

Shift Information

40-hour day shift, consisting of four 10-hour days. On-call duties are required one night per week and during weekends based on staffing needs, with a typical schedule from 6:30 am to 5:00 pm.

Certifications/Requirements

  • BLS/BCLS certification
  • ACLS certification (to be obtained within 60 days of hire if not already held)

Job Description

The Registered Nurse in the Operating Room is responsible for delivering high-quality patient care while ensuring compliance with hospital policies and regulations. The ideal candidate will advocate for patient privacy and confidentiality, maintain a safe and clean environment, and respond promptly to emergency situations.

Essential Functions

  • Provide friendly, courteous, and respectful interactions with patients, families, and colleagues.
  • Assist patients and staff as needed and seek assistance when necessary.
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing interventions and patient care plans.
  • Document patient data and nursing interventions accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Administer medications and intravenous therapy according to physician orders and established protocols.
  • Collaborate effectively with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and surgical teams to assure patient well-being during procedures.
  • Maintain sterile fields during surgical procedures and ensure proper handling of sterile supplies and instruments.
  • Conduct patient assessments and reassessments, including pain levels, to ensure effective pain management.
  • Facilitate patient and family education based on identified learning needs and readiness.
  • Prepare patients and families for discharge, incorporating necessary support systems and resources.
  • Engage in professional development and promote learning among colleagues.
  • Identify and address potential risks to patient safety and collaborate on strategies to reduce errors.

Job Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current Massachusetts RN license.
  • Less than 1 year of relevant experience is acceptable; O.R. nursing experience and CNOR certification are preferred.
  • Exceptional communication skills and the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Additional Information

This position may require holiday coverage and participation in a call rotation. All employees with direct patient contact must maintain high standards of hand hygiene and continuously seek to improve patient care and safety.
