Description: The Registered Nurse implements professional nursing practice centered on the patient as a whole person. The role focuses on the creation of a caring environment centered on healing and wellness. Nursing practices are based on evidence, current research, and established policies and procedures. Clinical decision-making incorporates all phases of the nursing process, critical thinking, and creativity. Nursing excellence is promoted through relationships among nursing staff and across other disciplines. Responsibilities include assessing patient needs, performing comprehensive assessments, and identifying patient risk factors. Obtaining health information from family or others is necessary to ensure thorough understanding. Objective and subjective data will be collected to verify initial assessments. Developing a prioritized problem list based on input from the inter-professional team is essential. Designing actions and interventions relevant to the patient’s culture and age will be necessary. Desired outcomes will be coordinated with the patient and family according to the medical plan of care. Patient care therapies and procedures will be implemented in accordance with established policies and procedures. Explaining procedures and treatments to patients and families is a vital part of the role. Initiating actions to alleviate patient stress and discomfort will be expected. Recognizing, responding to, and communicating changes in patient conditions is critical. Conducting ongoing assessments and documenting responses to procedures and therapies is part of the nursing process. Tasks will be delegated appropriately, and oversight will be provided for team members. Patient education related to prioritized problems will be addressed according to comprehension levels. Facilitating the patient discharge process and executing discharge orders in a timely manner is crucial. Input into patient/nurse assignments will be provided based on available staffing and unit activity. Active participation in unit-based activities in support of organizational values is expected. Promoting a positive group dynamic and a healing environment through words and actions will be essential. Assuring nursing excellence in accordance with accepted standards, evidence-based practice, and current research is required. Participation in quality improvement activities such as monitoring documentation and patient satisfaction is important. A holistic perspective regarding patient care is a key component of the role.
