The RN provides care to these patients via the utilization of the nursing process, nursing trends, technology, and resources within the philosophy of the institution. The RN performs all responsibilities and duties required by the unit as specific to the scope of service. The RN implements procedures and theories related to the specific area of practice. The RN maintains up-to-date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided to assure the integration of information for use by the healthcare team. The RN completes initial assessment upon patient admission and develops an appropriate plan of care in accordance with unit standards, based on patient and family needs. The RN implements the plan of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures. The RN modifies the plan of care based upon continuous evaluation. The RN takes responsibility for patient and employee safety by reporting and/or correcting safety hazards and incidents. The RN communicates with others directly and in private when necessary to resolve issues. The RN offers constructive feedback to assist in the professional development of peers and confers with colleagues to expand their knowledge base. The RN identifies their own learning needs and takes initiative to begin appropriate solutions. The RN fulfills all requirements of departmental competencies. The RN provides post-operative care for the complex surgical population. The RN assesses and intervenes appropriately to ensure positive outcomes during the post-operative phase. The RN monitors and cares for newly tracheostomies. The RN assesses and maintains wounds that require a wound vacuum and other complex wound management. The RN assesses, manages, and educates patients and families on new ostomies. The RN works collaboratively with surgical residency services.
