Assumes responsibility for an assigned group of patients. Documents patient responses to nursing interventions and prescribed medical treatments. Notes all changes in physician orders for assigned patients. Assists the physician in the examination of patients and in performing minor diagnostic procedures and treatment. Obtains and monitors physiological data of patients. Observes the physiological manifestations of patients and intervenes when necessary. Administers medication as prescribed. Initiates, regulates, and monitors intravenous infusions and blood products. Delivers patient care competently. Interacts with family and patients in sharing the care plan while in the hospital and at the time of discharge. Informs patients and families of hospital procedures. Makes referrals regarding patient care needs to appropriate personnel. Delegates tasks to support staff. Performs other duties as assigned. This position requires nurses with medical-surgical experience, particularly in caring for inpatients pre or post-surgical services. Patients will include those needing post-operative care. Ratios for surgical patients are 5 or 6:1, and for the stepdown care area, 3:1. Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practices, techniques, and procedures is essential. Ability to organize, plan, coordinate, and evaluate nursing services and apply nursing techniques. Requires good verbal and written communication skills. Ability to respond effectively to the cultural and language needs of patients and visitors is necessary. Some computer skills are required. Education: Associate's Degree in Nursing from an accredited program is required. Bachelor of Science in Nursing is preferred.
