Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Medical Surgical Oncology Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Night Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum of 2 years in acute care License: RN license required Certifications: AHA BLS Must-Have: - Oncology skills checklist - Teaching hospital experience required Description: This position is for a Registered Nurse specializing in Medical Surgical Oncology. The nurse will work on a surgical oncology unit. Shifts will be on nights, with varying days of the week. Candidates must have a minimum of 2 years of acute care experience. First-time travelers are accepted if they have teaching hospital experience. Weekend coverage is required based on unit needs. Certification in BLS is mandatory. Nurses may float to other like units and facilities as needed. The unit has a total of 36 staffed beds. Charting is done using an electronic system. The nurse-to-patient ratio may flex based on staffing and unit needs. Nurses will care for patients with known cancer diagnoses needing surgical interventions. This unit focuses on patients recovering post-operatively. Patients typically do not receive chemotherapy or biotherapy during their stay. Staff will assist patients in achieving specific post-operative milestones for discharge. The nurse will provide education and support to patients and their families. Special procedures are tailored towards diagnoses and surgical interventions related to the abdomen or pelvic area. Nurses will receive educational resources to address knowledge gaps. Standard medical equipment will be used, and new technology may be implemented.
