Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Medical Surgical Oncology Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Rotating Shifts Hours per Shift: 12 Hours Experience: Minimum 2 years of acute care experience required License: Current RN license required Certifications: AHA BLS required Must-Have: Teaching hospital experience is required for first-time travelers Description: This position is for a registered nurse in the surgical oncology unit. The unit primarily cares for patients with known cancer diagnoses requiring surgical interventions. Nursing staff will provide post-operative care to help patients achieve specific milestones for discharge. The majority of diagnoses and procedures are related to the abdomen or pelvic area, including gynecologic, colorectal, pancreatic, liver, and stomach oncology. Chemotherapy or biotherapy administration is not performed on this unit, so certifying in these areas is not necessary. Floating to other like units or sister facilities may be required based on facility needs. Standard medical equipment is utilized, with training provided during orientation. Nurses will also work closely with interdisciplinary teams, including physical therapy, respiratory services, and social services, among others. Additional responsibilities include patient education and support as well as coordinating care. Nurses must be comfortable with flexible nurse-to-patient ratios based on unit needs.
