The oncology unit has 29 beds. The ratios on the unit are 1:5, with occasional 1:6. The charge nurse will operate out of the staffing grid, barring unusual circumstances. Nurse aides are generally available, with 3 assigned per day. Weekends are required every other weekend. Holidays will rotate with the staff. Scrub color is Caribbean Blue. Central monitor telemetry is available, but reading strips is not a requirement. Floating to medical acute units is rare. There will be three days of floor-specific orientation provided. Common diagnoses include acute oncology symptoms, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, sickle cell crisis, hematology issues, oncology cases, and end-of-life care. Patients from the outpatient area may come to the floor to complete their treatment if running late. Cancellation policy requires 12 hours' notice every two weeks.
