Description:
The position involves working in an acute care setting focusing on labor and delivery.
The unit has a total of 9 labor delivery recovery procedure rooms and 2 operating room suites.
There are 6 triage beds in addition to an 18-bed antepartum unit.
Postpartum care is managed in 36 private rooms with an average daily adult census of 18 and an infant census of 14.
Staffing ratios follow the AWHONN guidelines with a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1 to 3.
Clinicians must be able to titrate specific medications as per established orders, including insulin or heparin.
A charge nurse and house supervisor are available on each shift, with the charge nurse ideally free from taking assignments when possible.
Patient Care Technicians assist primarily with adult patients in the unit.
Clientists for labor and newborn care are available on-site 24/7, providing comprehensive support.
Nurses are required to troubleshoot respiratory equipment but do not handle setup.
Telemetry is monitored off the unit, relieving nurses from the need to interpret strips.
An Epic electronic fetal monitoring system is utilized on the unit.
Self-scheduling is allowed every 6 weeks, with weekend and holiday shifts required on a rotational basis.
Floating to related departments may be necessary based on staffing needs.
Professional scrubs are acceptable for staff attire.
The orientation includes shifts in the acute unit and additional training specific to labor and delivery.
