NICU Registered Nurse (RN) – Travel Nursing Contract in Midlothian, VA

Travel Nurse Job Details

• Weekly Estimated Pay: $2,130–$2,250
• Location: Midlothian, Virginia, near Richmond
• Healthcare Setting: Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
• Assignment: 13-week travel nursing contract

• Schedule: Nights, 7:00 p.m.–7:00 a.m.; three 12-hour shifts per week
• Hours: Approximately 36 hours per week
• Weekend and Holiday Coverage: Every other weekend and major holidays required
• Call: Possible, up to 24 hours during a six-week period
• Unit Highlights: 10-bed NICU caring for neonates 28 weeks and older; experience with bubble CPAP, ventilators, umbilical lines, arterial sticks, peripheral blood draws, heel sticks, and neonatal resuscitation

NICU Registered Nurse Job Requirements

• Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia or a compact state
• Minimum of 3 years of recent NICU or closely related critical care nursing experience
• Current BLS certification from an approved provider
• Neonatal resuscitation experience and applicable certification as required for the assignment
• Strong neonatal assessment, stabilization, and emergency response skills
• Previous travel nursing experience preferred
• Copy of nursing diploma or official transcript required
• Ability to float within related neonatal or women’s and children’s service areas as needed
• Ability to work night shifts, alternating weekends, and major holidays
• Comfort using electronic health records and infusion technology; Epic experience preferred

NICU Registered Nurse Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive assessments of neonatal patients and identify changing clinical conditions promptly.
• Develop, implement, prioritize, and evaluate individualized plans of care.
• Provide safe nursing care for premature and critically ill neonates requiring respiratory support and intensive monitoring.
• Manage and monitor bubble CPAP, mechanical ventilation, IV therapies, umbilical lines, and infusion pumps according to unit standards.
• Perform neonatal procedures and specimen collection, including arterial sticks, peripheral blood draws, and heel sticks.
• Administer medications and treatments safely while monitoring effectiveness and potential adverse reactions.
• Recognize and respond to neonatal deterioration, emergencies, and resuscitation events.
• Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, respiratory therapists, and the broader interdisciplinary care team.
• Educate and support parents and families regarding neonatal care, treatment plans, discharge preparation, and follow-up needs.
• Promote patient safety, infection prevention, privacy, and family-centered care.
• Document care accurately in the electronic health record and communicate changes in patient status effectively.
• Support a positive, adaptable team environment while maintaining professionalism during high-acuity and high-stress situations.
