Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Registered Nurse – NICU / Special Care Nursery for a travel assignment. The ideal candidate must have a minimum of 2 years of NICU experience and previous experience working in a Level II NICU/Special Care Nursery.

This unit provides specialized care for neonates 32 weeks gestational age and above, including infants requiring CPAP, high-flow oxygen, sepsis monitoring, hyperbilirubinemia management and feeder/grower care.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of NICU experience – Required
  • Level II NICU / Special Care Nursery experience – Required
  • Level III NICU experience preferred
  • NRP – Required
  • BLS – Required
  • Strong neonatal assessment and patient-care skills
  • Ability to independently start IVs in neonates
  • Must be comfortable caring for premature and medically complex newborns
  • Stable NICU experience is NOT required

Unit Details

  • 12 licensed Special Care Nursery beds
  • Average census: approximately 10 patients
  • Approximately 325 deliveries per month
  • Typical nurse-to-patient ratio: 3:1, depending on acuity; may be 2:1 for higher-acuity patients
  • Level II Special Care Nursery
  • Cares for infants 32 weeks gestation and above

Common Patient Population

  • CPAP patients
  • High-flow oxygen patients
  • Feeder/Grower infants
  • Respiratory/Sepsis monitoring
  • Hyperbilirubinemia (Hyperbili)
  • Other Level II neonatal conditions

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care to neonatal patients
  • Perform neonatal assessments and monitor changes in condition
  • Start and manage peripheral IV access
  • Care for infants receiving CPAP and high-flow oxygen
  • Monitor and manage feeder/grower infants
  • Provide care for neonates requiring sepsis observation
  • Manage hyperbilirubinemia patients
  • Collaborate with NNPs, neonatologists and pediatric providers
  • RNs are not required to titrate drips on this unit
  • Certified neonatal PICC team available for PICC placement

Support & Providers

  • NNPs in-house 24/7
  • Pediatrician coverage/on-call available 24 hours
  • Neonatal PICC team available
  • PCT/HUC available to assist with neonatal patient care
  • Charge Nurse manages the shift and attends high-risk deliveries; typically does not carry an assignment

Monitoring & Respiratory Support

  • No dedicated monitor techs
  • When a rhythm/strip requires evaluation, RN may consult the NNP, Neonatologist or Cardiologist on call
  • Respiratory support includes:
    • CPAP
    • High Flow

Schedule

  • 12-hour night shifts
  • 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
  • Self-scheduling is available
  • Weekend Requirement: 3 weekend shifts per schedule/month, consisting of:
    • Friday or Saturday shifts
    • One Sunday shift
  • Holiday Requirement: One major and one minor holiday if they fall within the assignment
  • No call or standby requirement

Floating Requirement

NICU travelers must be willing to float to the sister hospital's NICU at Chandler Regional as required.

Orientation & Skills Validation

  • Department-specific orientation: 2 shifts
  • Day 1 Sim Lab: Pass/Fail simulation for Foley catheter insertion
  • Study guides will be provided with first-day instructions
  • Clinicians should be prepared to successfully complete the required skills validation

Candidates may not have been full-time, part-time, or PRN employees with any facility associated with CommonSpirit Health, including CHI and/or Dignity, within the previous 12 months.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a confident NICU/SCN RN with at least 2 years of neonatal nursing experience, Level II experience, strong neonatal assessment skills and the ability to care for infants requiring CPAP and high-flow support.

Level III NICU experience is preferred but not required.
