Description

Job Opportunity – Neuro ICU Registered Nurse – North Carolina

Start Date: October 2026

Location: North Carolina

Compensation: Details provided to qualified applicants

Schedule: 12-hour night shifts (18:45 - 07:15); 36 hours per week with every other weekend required; 13-week assignment available; float requirement applies

Highlights:
  • Comprehensive Stroke Center specializing in acute stroke care, hemorrhagic strokes, craniotomies, and complex neurosurgical cases
  • Patient ratios of 2:1, with potential to flex to 3:1 during high census periods
  • Average daily census of 11-12 patients in a 13-bed unit
  • Epic EMR system with full interdisciplinary support including IV teams, respiratory services, rapid response teams, and pharmacy
  • Specialized equipment including EVDs, lumbar drains, Camino ICP monitoring, LICOX, NICOM, and Arctic Sun
  • 24-hour orientation period over 2 shifts with comprehensive onboarding
Requirements:
  • Minimum 2 years of Neuro ICU experience required (strong neuro critical care background essential, not general ICU)
  • Previous travel nursing experience required; first-time travelers will not be accepted
  • Active RN license (North Carolina or Compact state license)
  • Current certifications: ACLS, BLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • Must pass EKG testing prior to start date
  • Proficiency in ventriculostomy management (EVDs), lumbar drains, ICP monitoring, and post-neurosurgery care
  • Experience with stroke management (ischemic and hemorrhagic), ventilated patients, blood product administration, and central line management
  • Skills in dysrhythmia interpretation and management, continuous IV sedation, and isolation precautions
  • Comfort with floating to other units as needed
  • Flu vaccination required (medical/religious exemptions only)
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Arterial line management experience
Patient Population:

This unit serves as a Comprehensive Stroke Center with a patient population that includes ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes (including subarachnoid hemorrhage), subdural hematomas, post-craniotomy patients, carotid stents and endarterectomies, aneurysm coiling and clipping, seizures, depth electrodes, and myasthenia gravis. Stroke patients represent one of the largest populations served.
