Assumes responsibility for an assigned group of patients. Documents patient responses to nursing interventions and prescribed medical treatments. Notes all changes in physician orders on assigned patients. Assists physician in the examination of patients and in performing minor diagnostic procedures and treatments. Obtains and monitors physiological data of patients. Observes physiological manifestations of patients and intervenes when necessary. Administers medication as prescribed and initiates, regulates, and monitors intravenous infusions and blood products. Delivers patient care competently. Interacts with families and patients in sharing care plans while in the hospital and at the time of discharge. Informs patients and families of hospital procedures. Makes referrals regarding patient care needs to appropriate personnel. Delegates tasks to support staff. Performs other duties as assigned. This position is in a mixed stepdown and acute care unit, caring for post-surgical kidney, liver, and pancreas transplant patients. Also cares for pre-transplant patients who are being evaluated for a transplant during their inpatient stay. Patients require close monitoring for infection, rejection, and timely medication delivery. This is not a post-anesthesia care unit position. Any nurse on this floor will work in either the med/surg or stepdown capacity, depending on the availability of nurses. Preceptor and charge experience preferred. Required skills include knowledge of professional nursing theory, practices, techniques, and procedures. Ability to organize, plan, coordinate, and evaluate nursing services and apply nursing techniques. Must maintain good working relationships with other employees and have good verbal and written communication skills. Ability to respond effectively to the cultural and language needs of patients and visitors. Some computer skills are required.
