Description

Job Title: Med Surg Registered Nurse Profession: RN (Registered Nurse) Specialty: Medical Surgical Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12H Nights Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum 2 years License: Required Certifications: BLS (AHA) Must-Have: At least 1 year of Medical Surgical experience. Description: The department consists of a 30-bed unit. Nurse to patient ratios are typically 4-6 patients on days and 5-6 patients at night, occasionally up to 7 at night. Common diagnoses include post-operative patients following knee, hip, shoulder, thyroidectomy, appendectomy, and cholecystectomy procedures. Medical patients commonly present with hypertension, heart failure, pneumonia, COPD, altered mental status, TIA, diabetes mellitus, sepsis, urinary tract infections, and acute kidney injury. Safe and dependable nurses are preferred. RNs are rarely required to titrate drips. Common titratable and set-rate drips include heparin and PCAs. Charge nurses take patient assignments, sometimes full and sometimes modified. The unit is supported by nurse aides with a 1:10 ratio. Respiratory therapy equipment includes CPAP and, in rare cases, BiPAP. Central monitoring is available, but RNs do not have to read and interpret telemetry. Telemetry technicians are available on site, with the ability to call for rhythms. Shifts are flexible and accommodating to requests, with schedules generated by management. Weekend requirements may vary between every third weekend, every other weekend, or none at all. Holiday shifts require working 2 out of 3 winter holidays and every other holiday. There is no call or standby requirement. Floating to similar units may be necessary, potentially to IMC, ICU, or ED. The dress code requires navy blue scrubs. Unit-specific orientation includes 3 days for agency personnel, with opportunities for shadowing and early equipment training. All personnel must clock in and out on site.
