Description:
Department: Medical Surgical Unit.
Nurse-patient ratios: 4-6 patients on days, 5-6 patients on nights, occasionally up to 7 at night.
Common diagnoses/types of patients include post-operative procedures such as knee, hip, shoulder, and thyroidectomies, appendectomies, and cholecystectomies.
Also includes medical patients with conditions such as hypertension, heart failure, pneumonia, COPD, altered mental status, TIA, diabetes mellitus, sepsis, urinary tract infections, and acute kidney injury.
RNs are required to titrate drips rarely.
Common drips include heparin and PCAs.
Charge nurse takes assignments that can be full or modified.
There are nurse aides on the unit with a ratio of 1 aide for every 10 patients.
Respiratory equipment includes CPAP for home settings and BiPAP (rare).
Central telemetry monitoring is available; however, nurses are not required to read and interpret tele.
Telemetry technicians are available for assistance.
Management is flexible and accommodating with scheduling based on requests.
Shifts are either 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM or 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM, with a mandatory 30-minute unpaid break.
Weekend and holiday requirements vary.
There is no call or standby requirement.
Floating may occur to similar units, and nurses may float as a CNA to intermediate care, ICU, or emergency department.
Dress code requires navy blue scrubs.
