The average length of stay for patients is three days, with a high patient turnover. RNs will be responsible for managing a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1 to 5. There are charge nurses on the unit who do take patient assignments, acting as team leads. Nurse aides are also available on this unit, working 8 or 10-hour shifts. Nurses are equipped to use CPAP, BiPAP, and high-flow oxygen equipment. Self-scheduling is allowed to some degree, with schedules created approximately 30-45 days in advance. Weekend work is required every other week or four weekend shifts in a four-week schedule. Holiday work is incorporated into the permanent staff rotation. Nurses may float to telemetry or obstetrics if they have the appropriate experience. The dress code consists of navy blue scrubs. There is a hospitalist onsite 24/7, and while they are readily available, it is a very fast-paced environment.
