Description:
The Surgical Acute Medical Surgical unit consists of 63 beds.
Nurse to patient ratios are 4-5 RNs during the day and 5-6 RNs at night.
Ratios may increase to 1:6 on days and 1:7 on nights if absolutely necessary.
Common diagnoses include post-operative surgical cases, trauma, overflow medical patients, and more.
Nurses provide dressing changes, wound care, IV therapy, pain management, and manage drains and NG tubes.
Experience in post-operative care is crucial.
Nurses are not required to titrate drips, except for heparin.
A charge nurse is present on each shift and does not take an assignment.
A house supervisor is available 24/7.
Patient care technicians assist with vital signs, accu checks, activities of daily living, turning, and ambulation.
Telemetry monitoring is available, but bedside RNs do not read their own strips.
There are no requirements for nurses to manage vents; they only manage CPAP settings and inhalers.
Weekend shifts are required every other weekend, including Saturday and Sunday.
Holiday shifts rotate every other holiday.
Travelers are the first to float to other units, and they will float to units with the same level of experience.
Travelers do not have self-scheduling.
Scrubs of any color are acceptable.
Unit-specific orientation includes two shifts with a preceptor followed by additional orientation shifts.
