Description

Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Surgical Acute/Medical Surgical Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-hour Nights Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: 1 year License: Active Illinois RN license or confirmation of application initiation Certifications: BLS Must-Have: Experience in post-operative care, critical thinking skills, good bedside manner, and teamwork. Description: The unit is comprised of 63 beds, including 49 private and 9 observation beds. The nurse-patient ratio is typically 4-5 patients per RN during the day and 5-6 patients per RN during the night, which may increase during peak times. Required skills include post-operative care of patients, critical thinking abilities, and asking for help when necessary. Maintaining a good bedside manner and being a team player are essential. There is no requirement for RNs to titrate drips; only Heparin is utilized. Charge nurses do not take patient assignments and will be present during each shift. A house supervisor is available 24/7. Patient care technicians are available, with ratios of 7-10 patients per PCT during the day and 10-15 at night. PCTs assist with vital signs, accu checks, activities of daily living, turning, and ambulation. Respiratory therapy manages equipment, while RNs handle inhalers and may place patients on CPAP. There are telemetry/monitor techs on the unit, and bedside RNs do not read strips; this is managed at a central station. Shifts are from 0700 to 1930 for days and 1930 to 0730 for nights. Weekend shifts are required every other weekend. Holidays are rotated every other year. Travelers will be the first to float to units with a similar level of experience. Travelers taking an ICU assignment will be assigned a team of three patients on a general unit. Dress code permits any color scrubs. Unit-specific orientation includes two shifts with a preceptor and additional professional training.
