Description

Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Surgical Acute Med Surg Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-hour nights Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum 1 year License: Active Illinois license required or confirmation of application process Certifications: BLS Must-Have: Experience in post-operative care, critical thinking skills, ability to ask for help when needed, good bedside manner, team player Description: This position is for a Registered Nurse in a Surgical Acute Med Surg setting. The unit has a total of 63 beds, including 49 private and 9 observation beds. The nurse-patient ratios are 4-5 patients per RN during the day and 5-6 patients at night. Ratios may increase to 1:6 on days and 1:7 on nights if absolutely necessary. Common patient diagnoses include post-operative surgical care, trauma, overflow medical cases, and patients requiring dressing changes, wound care, IV therapy, pain management, drains, NG tubes, central lines, and TPN. The Registered Nurse is not required to titrate drips, with only Heparin as a common titratable drip. There is a Charge Nurse and House Supervisor on each shift, with Charge Nurses not taking assignments. Nursing assistants or patient care technicians are present on the unit, with ratios of 7-10 patients per PCT during the day and 10-15 at night. PCTs assist with vital signs, accu-checks, activities of daily living, turning, and ambulation. Respiratory therapy equipment like CPAP and high flow is managed by the respiratory team, while RNs handle inhalers. Telemetry patients are monitored by centralized monitor technicians, and bedside RNs are not required to read their own telemetry strips. Shifts are scheduled from 0700 to 1930 for days and 1930 to 0730 for nights. Weekend requirements include every other weekend, with shifts on both Saturday and Sunday. Holiday coverage will be rotated every other holiday. There are no call or standby requirements, but travelers will be the first to float to units with the same level of experience. Travelers may float to a general unit if they have ICU experience, taking a team of three patients. The dress code allows any colored scrubs. The orientation includes 2 shifts with a preceptor, plus one 12-hour shift for system training and professional orientation.
